Why Linen?

Linen is spunned fibers from the flax plant, iconic for its durability, breathability, and unique texture. Here are some benefits of choosing linen for your travel wardrobe during the summer months:

  • Breathability: Linen is highly breathable, ideal for warm climates.

  • Moisture-Wicking: Linen has excellent moisture-wicking properties, which keeps you fresh throughout the hottest of days.

  • Durability: Linen is a strong natural fiber, especially wet, ensuring that your handmade garments withstand travel and frequent washing.

  • Sustainability: Linen is an eco-friendly fabric that requires less water and pesticides to cultivate than other fibers. Choosing Linen supports sustainable fashion.

  • Versatility: Linen can be dressed up or down, perfect for various occasions, from casual sightseeing to elegant dinners.

The Benefits of a Handmade Linen Travel Wardrobe

  • Lightweight and Packable:

    • Linen garments are lightweight, so you can pack more without exceeding luggage weight limits.

    • Linen's natural crumple adds a relaxed, effortless charm, and its wrinkles tend to fall out with wear, making ironing optional.

  • Temperature Regulation:

    • Linen keeps you cool in hot weather and provides warmth in cooler climates, making it versatile for various travel destinations.

  • Timeless Elegance:

    • Linen's natural luster and texture add a sophisticated touch to any outfit.

    • The fabric ages beautifully, developing a soft, lived-in look over time.

  • Easy to Sew:

    • Linen is a beginner-friendly fabric that is easy to cut, sew, and handle.

    • Its stability means it doesn’t shift around much, allowing for precise sewing and crisp seams.

Embracing Linen Wrinkles

Many people love linen, but loathe the wrinkles and choose not to pack linen for their getaways. Yes, linen wrinkles—you either love it or you don't. But is there such a thing as good wrinkles versus bad wrinkles? As a lifelong linen lover, the answer is an absolute yes!

Good vs. Bad Wrinkles in Linen

  • Good Wrinkles:

I consider these the natural, soft, sculptural crinkles and folds that give linen its characteristic relaxed and casual look. They add to the fabric's charm and comfort, making it perfect for easygoing summer styles.

  • Bad Wrinkles (Creases):

These are more like sharp, deep lines that form when you sit for a while wearing a linen dress or pants, making the garment look like it is still sitting when you stand up.

Here are a few tips to help avoid those pesky creases and enjoy the good wrinkles that give Linen its unique appeal:

  • Use a Heavier Weight Linen:

Heavier linens tend to wrinkle less than lighter ones. Opt for mid-weight or heavy-weight linen fabrics, especially for pants and dresses, to minimize deep creases.

  • Line Your Linen Garment with a Tightly Woven Lightweight Cotton:

Adding a cotton lining can help reduce the formation of wrinkles. The lining also provides structure and support to the linen, helping it maintain its shape better. Click here to learn more about underlinings in my blog tutorial.

  • Sewing with a Linen-Cotton Blend Fabric:

Linen-cotton blends combine the best of both fabrics. The cotton reduces wrinkling, while the linen maintains a breathable, natural feel. This blend is excellent for bottoms and dresses where you want to balance structure with comfort.

Packing Tips for Linen Clothes

Most hotels or rentals will include irons, but who wants to iron on your during precious vacation time? Most cruises do not allow irons or steamers on board. Packaging and unpacking your linen garments are key to avoiding heavy, stubborn creases.

  • Roll Instead of Fold:

Rolling your linen garments can help minimize wrinkles and save space in your luggage. Rolling similar-sized garments together will also help keep the nasty wrinkles at bay.

  • Pack Garments in Dry Cleaner Bags:

The bag will act as a buffer between garments.

  • Hang Upon Arrival:

As soon as you reach your destination, unpack your linen clothes, shake them, then smooth them out, and hang them up. The weight of the fabric will help release any wrinkles that form during travel.

  • Hang up in the Bathroom While Showering:

Use the steam in the shower to softly release some wrinkles, smooth them out while in the bathroom, and then hang them in the closet

  • OR Just Let them be:

Accept that linen will naturally wrinkle. Embrace the relaxed, lived-in look it provides

Care Tips for Linen Garments

  • Washing:

Wash linen garments in cold or lukewarm water with a mild detergent to preserve the fabric's integrity. You can machine wash linen, just use the delicate cycle. I always do a double rinse.

  • Stain treatment:

Bleach is a no-no. It will break down the fibers in a heartbeat. I found soaking in an oxygenated detergent such as OxiClean, or OxiClean Max Force stain remover will do the trick.

  • Drying:

Use a dryer on a delicate cycle, and lower temperature. Remove. the garment while it’s slightly damp, shake it out, and hang it to finish drying.

  • Finishing:

Pressing with a hot steamy iron will remove wrinkles. You could also use a steamer to soften the larger wrinkles or creases. I really like this travel steamer I found on Amazon. Actually works better than my home steamer. Compact, and lightweight. The head turns for easy steaming with hanging items or flat steaming.
